When I entered my mid 20s in the late 2000s, I realized that some of my sexual fantasies can be tied together with intimacy/romance. And after dating or interacting with my share of “vanilla and “vanilla type” women from 2005 to 08, I was demoralized. These women said the same thing–BDSM, role-playing or pornography cannot be incorporated into a healthy relationship. I started to accept that these girls were right that maybe I had a warped view and that I was sick in the head.

Fortunately, I stumbled across your website sometime in summer or fall 2008 and soaked in what your website and recordings provided—comfort and reassurance. I want to thank you for assisting me to accept my sexuality. I now realize that I am no different from other folks that know there is a time and place to fool around and have fun, yet are able to carry a healthy lifestyle of holding a job or attending school in addition to holding normal relationships with people.

Thanks for the post. Everything you wrote is spot on. My relationship with the city was becoming very routine. I’m so looking forward to coming back to NYC for a visit. To be there as a tourist and not as a native will be an interesting, hopefully, less exhausting adventure. The constant stimulation of the city definitely created major peaks and valleys in my well being.

Hi Mia – Congratulations on the move. You’re right about NYC – living here can be an amazing adventure, but after a few years it can wear you down. There can be too much to see, too much to do, too many people to meet. It makes you feel like you need to experience everything, all the time. I’ve seen people that have live here for 15 or 20 years that have gotten into routines to deal with the constant stimulation. They end up losing their sense of amazement for the city. I would rather move away and enjoy this magnificent city from afar than allow it to become routine. Even if you leave the city will always be here and you will always be a part of it.

I also think that a big move every few years is healthy. It allows you to immerse yourself into another community and start a love affair with another city. My wife and I are still in a three year tryst with Brooklyn, and absolutely loving it. We’re thinking that it will last for another three years then on to new pastures. Right now Austin is top on our list. We were hoping that we would meet you some Saturday evening at a little warehouse party in Prospect Heights (you know the one!), but perhaps down the road we’ll meet in Texas. Keep up the podcast – we can’t wait to hear about your adventures in Austin.

My girlfriend and I love to listen! Keep ‘em coming! it has made me and my girlfriend a lot more adventurous and shameless (I believe that is a good word choice). I’ve really enjoyed listening to your podcasts. I consider myself a fairly vanilla guy on the outside but I’ve got some secret kinks and fetishes. There are a ton of BDSM related podcasts but ironically I feel that your fictional-but-inspired-by-real-life stories are more sincere and relatable than even live interviews of pro dommes or lifestyle players.

I can live more vicariously through your podcasts, despite the fact that I’m not a lesbian swinger, and I find that I need that release from time to time because too much vanilla really wears on me.

I wish I could check out the public reading because its fun to compare the images you create in your head to the likeness of the actual people, but NY is a bit of a hike for me. Hopefully there will be future readings as well.

Hey Mia,

You really laid out the emotions and obstacles well. It reminded me of a breakup that I went thru last year, also. That one was way way messy as it was an affair and resulted in a divorce and drama that still goes on now. Communication, when things are not quite right is so damn hard. You are so right about smells — they can transport us to places in our memory. And I am bad about writing about them. Lots of times I try and insert some sort of smell, but end up taking it our cause it doesn’t feel right. Or, I just don’t remember what the place smelled like or the place really had no significant smell. But smell is an important element and I should work on those details. Thanks for the suggestion.

I know exactly what you mean about dry and raw feeling of Las Vegas. I’ve felt that. I love that dry heat. Mostly NY stinks. At the pirate party there was not much of a salty seashore smell, but a moldy sea algae smell. Should have noted that somewhere in the story. Anyway, thanks for your comment and suggestion.

Your stories allow me to see a world of sex without the stigma of traditional christian filter. You come off as very strong and I find myself hoping good things for you and your lover (Carmen).

While I’m thinking about it I was wondering if you could add smells to your stories. For instance, the boat in lip service was in a harbor or pier right? Could you smell the salt in the air, taste the humidity? Just enough to set the scene. Smells have a transporting quality. When I visit friends in Nevada I instantly feel Las Vegas is dry and raw – my breathe is deeper and causes an instant light headedness.

Andrew, I appreciate the feedback. I think there is more about my head and heart in these last couple ones. I guess I’m at that point in the story. When I was single and going to parties it was more about the event. Now it is more about the relationship. I thought people might be disappointed with less sex, but much like yourself, everyone I have heard from has found these last few very sexy. It’s good to know.

Sometimes when I talk to poly people they make it sound like having sex outside your primary relationship or having more than one partner is really easy. And that jealousy is just a man-made emotion. Conceptually, any form of non-monogamy makes sense to me, but creating and maintaining an open relationship is way more difficult to digest than the concept. At least for me, which is why I wrote this piece and, really, which is why I created this podcast — to work some things out and try and gain more understanding. I think you touch on something that really rings true for me — decisions made when calm and happy can seem absurd when we are having a bad day or feeling needy or so on. Well said. I think it takes everyone a while to figure out the right combination of monogamy or non-monogamy. Good luck on your travels and thanks for your opinion. xxMia

I’ve very much been in this position. A lot of discussion and decisions and negotiation feel resolved and stable, but after the fact emotions can go all sorts of directions. Likewise the choices we make when we are calm and happy can seem absurd when we are having a bad day or feeling needy or so on.

Living this kind of life of adventure can be amazing, but can also be so trying. I’m still trying to find my way in it. Trying not to break any hearts and trying to be as honest as I can be, with myself and my partners.

Sometimes both alternatives, being single and wild or being monogamous, seem far more attractive. Sometimes I wonder if the way I feel now is just a phase. Sometimes I feel like once to poly/swinger/non-monogamous door is open it would be impossible to go back.

It’s nice hearing it in someone else’s words.

As always, your podcast is amazing.

I am a 34 year old guy and I started listening to your podcasts last spring just to get my “rocks off” during my commute to work,

But I must say, my favorite parts of your stories are the “real world” scenarios you describe!

Like when a guy cant get his cock hard, how some parties don’t interest you.. or in this case ,your conflict and confusion with Carmen

Those types of moments really add textures to your story telling I believe
