I wanted to share a portion of a letter that I enjoyed because the writer touches on a direction I would like to take my work. It is reassuring to hear that even if I write about motherhood (like in my last post), I will still have an audience.

I hope when you come out of the fog of life with a newborn (been there!) that you find a moment to gather your thoughts and write them down and share them. Yes, I love the way you write about sex, but I have more specifically loved your gift for reaching inside you and getting it all down in words in ways that always move me. Writing about this experience would be no different, even if somehow you never once mentioned your breasts or vagina! I wish you the best of luck, thank you for being an important part of my journey in coming more fully into my own sexual being.

My former job in SEO was a cubed life with metrics to hit every hour. The job attracted competitive gamers of which I am not. But ex-New Yorker, type A personality, and borderline workaholic I am. So it’s no wonder I took to the Baby ESP app that can track everything from hours spent breastfeeding, to diaper changes, and bath time complete with stats and charts. With my former metric loving position and my workaholic self that has had to surrender to days where nothing is “accomplished” other than keeping the kid alive and healthy, I have complied some stats and lists of my own. Be assured, dear reader, that I have not complied these list begrudgingly. I love my new role as MOM and I also look forward to when I can be MOM and take on other responsibilities and interests as well. Here are some daily stats from the first 6 weeks of raising my son. And, to be fair, by husband has been a part of these stats, but as the primary caretaker I hold the record.

Stats per day unless noted:
Longest stretch of sleep = 2.5 hours. Slowly creeping towards 4 as the weeks go by.
Diapers changes = 15
Nursing = 8 on average with 2 feedings from the bottle.
Average nursing session length (with burping and diaper changes) = 40 min
Number of times I am spit up on = 3
Number of times I am peed on = 1/week. I have mastered blocking techniques.
Outfit changes for him = 3
Outfit changes for me = 1 (would be more if I cared)
Speed at which I eat dinner now = 7 minutes
Ability to talk over crying = 2 minutes and increasing the count daily
Pregnancy weight gain = 50 lbs (Yep, 50. And I loved gaining every bit of it. Except for what was a good 10 lbs of bloating – that was uncomfortable.)
Postpartum weight left to lose = 20 lbs
Number of shoes (including boots, heels, flats, and sneakers) leaving my closet = 14
Which brings me to pregnancy.

Things I miss about being pregnant:
1. Feeling him kick.
It was wonderful and creepy at the same time, more wonderful than weird.
2. Rubbing my belly.
I rubbed my Budda belly all day long regardless of any fetal movement. The taught oval shape was pleasing to touch. It was my way of bonding and soothing him and I, especially towards the end when things became more uncomfortable.
3. Indulging in sweets and not worrying about working it off.
I am not a person who can eat whatever I want and not gain anything. But I am a person who thinks life is too short to count calories everyday. I will say, I craved sweets, which was constantly, way more than I ate them. Between candy and cake from work I threw in some fruit and veggies for good measure.
4. The suspension of not knowing the gender and having people guess.
I like a surprise.
5. The attention.
It was very reassuring to be told I looked beautiful and glowing while putting on the pounds. And even though I felt like I mostly looked baggy eyed and swollen and people were just telling me I glowed because that is what you tell pregnant ladies, it was very nice to hear.

Things I will not miss about being pregnant:
1. I am a what???
I am not a fan of the D’s with stretch marks I carry now. I preferred my-fits-in-the-palm-of-your-hand B’s. Since I am breastfeeding the jugs are still with me and we are settling into each other, except for the fact that most of my clothes don’t fit me in the bust region now. But who am I kidding, most of my clothes don’t fit beyond the bust region. My body and fashion is a work in progress now.
2. Carpel tunnel.
At 6 months the tingling kicked in and continued until 3 weeks postpartum. The none stop sensation of being shocked by an electrical outlet is an annoyance, but the inability to press, grab, or hold anything is an annoyance layered with frustration and anger. I take carpel tunnel prevention seriously now.
3. Being puffy.
My feet, calves, hands, and face, namely around the eyes were varying degrees of swollen throughout the day. In the last trimester I was relegated to wearing a cheap pair of beach flip-flops. Which leads me to mention – shoes! I missed wearing them. I know I live in Austin, but flip-flops everyday is a bore.
4. Left side only.
Even before I was put on bed rest, it is recommended that pregnant ladies lay on their left side. This is to get the baby weight off the vena cava, the major vein that carries blood from the lower half of your body to your heart. When on bed rest, you are to be on your left side all day long. I came to understand how bedsores develop. Not only did it become uncomfortable and boring, but also I missed cuddling with my man. Sure he could still spoon me, but my favorite position of lying on top of him was lost for months.
5. The attention.
No matter where I went the conversation became the same: “When are you due? Boy or girl? Is it your first? Are you having morning sickness? Do you have names picked out? No, well, what are your top 5?” I could shoot of my responses to these questions with little irritation once I got my stock, neutral response down. But the unsolicited pregnancy and parenting horror stories and advice weighed me down with worry and dread.

Taking advice from the books, I learned to let opinions go in one ear and out the other. My Doctor reiterated, “You will be hearing unsolicited opinions about birthing and parenthood throughout the kid’s life. The quicker you can establish coping mechanisms, the better.” So I did.

I remained pretty neutral to all the opinions except for when it came to my “contents unknown” belly. People were shocked and sometimes angered that we didn’t know if we were having a boy or a girl. People said we were brave to not find out, that they could never do that, and how can we have a baby shower now. I never understood the disagreement with our surprise. Choosing to be a parent is brave, but waiting 9 months to see if we will be raising a boy or a girl – that’s not bravery, that is fun. And more importantly for us, not knowing the sex kept the gender conformity “pink is for girls and blue is for boys” stuff out of our house, at least for a little while.

My mother-in-law, an avid seamstress, said she was dying to put flowers and bows on the clothes she was making for our baby and would I mind if it turned out we had a boy. I told her, “No, I wouldn’t mind. I’m hoping for a gay kid.” She went for teddy bears instead.

And there you have it; my accomplishments and opinions thus far with more to come. I have surrendered to the realities of my new role and in doing so I have really begun to enjoy it.

My first encounter with the stroking technique that ultimately became OM came when I met a cute guy at a party. He gave me what I thought was the best pick-up line I’d ever heard. He said he wanted to put his attention on my orgasm for 15 minutes and I didn’t have to do anything in return. I still can’t quite believe I said yes but I did, and that’s how I first practiced it. I became very interested in the experience not just physically but mentally. I had been planning to move into the San Francisco Zen Center at the time, and I found it quieted my mind in much the same way meditation did. So I found out where he’d learned it, and went and lived with a community that was teaching it. Later I studied with a teacher named Ray Vetterlein, who became my mentor. He’d learned it in the 60s and taught it right up until he passed away last month.

At a certain point I realized I could marry the practice with everything I’d learned along my path of personal development, from Kabbalah to Zen. So with Ray’s encouragement I took the practice and made it into Orgasmic Meditation. I changed the technique in certain ways and began to lay down a philosophy that went with it. That philosophy is what ultimately came to be “Slow Sex.” It’s what makes OM different from other stroking practices out there.

2. The purpose of OM is not to orgasm, but to slow down and feel sensation. Why do you think it is important to focus on sensations rather than climax?

Most women are not having the sex they want to have. We want sensation and connection, but most of us are having goal-oriented sex that gets progressively faster and harder. Speed and pressure numb a woman’s most sensitive spot—her clitoris—so she has to work harder and harder to get the sensation she wants. By slowing down and re-learning how to feel, it’s possible to get exponentially more sensation with a fraction of the effort.

OM or Orgasmic Meditation does just that. It increases a woman’s capacity to feel arousal and sexual sensation, a little bit at a time. What you discover is that you don’t need to go faster and harder to feel heightened sensation. You can’t help but feel it! And that’s why I’ve discovered that the best sex is the slowest sex: the kind where you don’t want to move an inch.

3. If an orgasm is a 10 on a scale of 1 to 10, then if I understand OM right, the OM practice is about riding the waves of 0-9 for the sheer joy of riding those waves. By taking the goal of orgasm out of the equation, more pleasure may be derived. And by that sense can someone use OM for a “regular” sex practice? And if used in a “regular” sex practice is OM about delaying orgasms or just not focusing on them and riding the 0-9 waves?

You’re exactly right when you say that by taking any goal—climax or otherwise—out of the equation, suddenly the whole game shifts. OM is about finding the deepest pleasure available in each moment, right now, regardless as to whether you are having a climax. So no, it’s not at all about delaying orgasm. It’s about experiencing a new definition of orgasm—one that is far more broad than the specific moment of climax. One that takes into account every single tingle, every shiver, every swirl of heat and wave of chills that comes through you when you are in connection with another human being.

The principles of OM can definitely be taken into your “regular” sex life! In fact, they can be taken into every aspect of your life. They are all about noticing the sensations of pleasure in your body. Most of us spend our lives, and perhaps especially our sex lives, in our heads. We are constantly thinking about what we should be doing, thinking, feeling. What OM teaches us is how to put our attention on what we’re actually feeling, right now. The result is bigger than the sum of its parts! Everything starts to come alive.

4. The practice of OM is done with a partner. Can is also be practiced alone?

The practice does require a partner. It’s a touchy subject to say that a woman cannot experience this kind of orgasm alone, but it’s the truth for the simple reason that you cannot take yourself out of control. Just like you can’t tickle yourself, you cannot take yourself out of your own volition. Being out of control is the thing we crave most. It is the experience of orgasm. That’s why we enjoy climax so much: for one split second, we are taken out of the driver’s seat. We lose ourselves, quite literally, in sensation.

But with climax, that experience of being out control lasts only for a split second. The kind of orgasm that can be experienced through OM—an orgasm that is emerging as more natural to women—can last a full 15 minutes or longer. But it only works when there’s another person behind the wheel. The person being stroked can ask for adjustments, but on the whole she is surrendered to the person who is stroking her and her only “goal” is to lose herself in sensation.

5. Your book Slow Sex is based from your years of experiences running One Taste which is online media, courses, and coaching for individuals and couples in orgasm, relationships, and communication. What is the biggest thing you have learned in running One Taste and in writing Slow Sex?

I have learned so very much, I have no idea how to narrow it down! I’ve learned that yes, it’s a crazy idea to open a center devoted to female orgasm. And I’ve learned that as crazy as it is, it can still work. I’ve learned that if you say you’re teaching orgasm, only men show up. But if you say you’re teaching female orgasm, you get about 50% men and 50% women. I’ve learned that what seems like simple common sense logic to me (i.e. that orgasm is the common denominator between all of us, and thus we should all be talking about it) is incredibly confronting for a whole lot of other people.

But perhaps above all else, I’ve learned that being full of orgasm is the key to having a happy life. It’s what makes it possible for me to stop focusing on myself and start connecting with others. OM keeps me feeling satiated and hydrated enough that I can truly connect with everyone in my life: with my partner, my colleagues at OneTaste, my clients, and everyone I meet and interact with on a daily basis. Orgasm is what makes this work so rewarding and so much fun. I can’t imagine doing anything else with my life.

6. Because your work is based on guiding others through Orgasmic Meditation, do you find your own practice of OM challenging?

Not at all! I would say it’s the opposite. I teach OM because I love it so much. It’s a very personal experience for me. OM changed the entire direction of my life. And then there’s the fact that it’s just fun. I practice it every day because I want to! But don’t take it from me—I encourage everyone to try it themselves. You worst thing you might lose is 15 minutes. The best thing you might lose is your sense that you aren’t getting everything you crave from your sex life—and your life as a whole.

“Pulp Fiction” by Quentin Tarantino is a classic movie offering up many parody opportunities that, unfortunately, “Pulp Friction” falls short of. Much of the discussion centered on the pros and cons of creating work under pseudonyms. It seemed the general consensus was that people would like to not have two identities, but the reality of getting fired from one’s “real job” was far to great to risk. Pamela Madsen shared her story about getting fired from her job once her blog was revealed. I have been in Austin for 9 days now and each day I love it more and more. I am proud to say I lived in New York for as long as I did and I am proud to say I am leaving before I became so weighted down by the city life that I grew to hate it.

New York City gave me so much. It is a city I will always be grateful to for allowing me to hide and be discovered at my choosing. I reinvented myself several times over the years, sometimes more domestic and suburban, sometimes more drunk and debaucherous. I feel strongly that for me, leaving NYC will lead me to better health, I will be a better partner, and at some point, a better parent. Nothing against anyone who manages to do it all in New York. I was expecting a lot from the Remote Control Bullet. The 10 different pulsation patterns didn’t intrigue me as much as the remote control feature. When Tess and Diva asked me to be a model in the calender, I was honored and thrilled to be a part of such a great project. They paired me with a photographer, told me the theme, Visions of Sexual Freedom, and gave me a deadline. I completely appreciated the freedom of expression to interpret the theme as I desired and I was a bit overwhelmed. What would my interpretation of sexual freedom look like?

Through lots of self reflection and discussions with the photographer, I discovered my sexual freedom is rooted in openness. I have found myself to be open in my sexual fluidity as a lesbian and bisexual, in exploring variations of non-monogamy, and in pushing boundaries in kink. All of which can be well described in written form, but how would it be translated into 2D and remain a hot, sexy photograph that would make people want to buy the calender?

On our first shoot, the photographer and I ended up with some sexy photos, but we felt the photos didn’t fully capture a sense of openness in bisexuality or non-monogamy. So for the second shoot we had help from willing participants to be props in the photos (thanks, MS & AW), which ended with many of the photos feeling contrived. Also, with additional limbs in the frame, sometimes I got lost and my agency confused. Was I preying on or being preyed on? Depicting agency in the photograph was really important to me; I wanted to look in control of my sexuality. So we dutiful set out on a third shot.
